China’s Media Industry Embraces Digital Transformation, AI, and Innovation

China’s media landscape has undergone a major transformation, evolving into a dynamic, data-driven, and AI-powered sector. According to the 54th China Statistical Report on Internet Development, nearly 1.1 billion internet users were recorded in China by June 2024, representing a 78% penetration rate.

The All China Journalists Association (ACJA) highlights that China now has over 3,600 internet news units offering 14,228 licensed services, including websites, apps, and public accounts. This development complements the robust print media sector, which saw 26.01 billion newspapers printed in 2023, contributing 35.57 billion Yuan in subscription revenue.

A key factor driving this change is the rapid growth of generative artificial intelligence (AI). AI is reshaping news production, from real-time reporting to automated content creation, personalized audience engagement, and predictive analytics. By incorporating AI, China’s media industry is improving both the efficiency and creativity of journalism, positioning the nation as a global leader in modern media practices.

The use of generative AI (AIGC) is rapidly expanding, with the market projected to reach 20 billion Yuan by 2024 and exceed 1 trillion Yuan by 2030. Media organizations are integrating AI technologies into film, TV, and music, fostering new avenues for collaboration and content creation.

The sector’s growth extends to employment, with the newspaper industry employing 184,000 people in 2023, a third consecutive year of growth. More than 1 million individuals are now working in radio, television, and online audiovisual services. By October 2024, China had 230,585 accredited journalists contributing to grassroots reporting and promoting ethical journalism.

China’s media industry saw significant economic growth in 2023, achieving an output value of 3.15 trillion Yuan, an 8.38% increase from the previous year. The media sector’s revenues from newspapers, national radio, and online audiovisual platforms have surged, with total earnings of over 1.4 trillion Yuan.

The ACJA continues to support journalists, advocating for their welfare and professional development, and promoting ethical practices. In 2024, over 580 reports focused on media social responsibility were published, further reinforcing the association’s role in shaping the future of China’s media industry.
