Denmark’s Prime Minister Affirms Greenland’s Right to Self-Determination Amid Trump’s Interest

Denmark’s Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen, has asserted that the future of Greenland rests solely in the hands of its people. This statement comes after incoming US President Donald Trump stirred controversy with his recent comments indicating a desire for the US to acquire the vast Arctic island, an autonomous territory of Denmark.

During a 45-minute telephone conversation with Trump, Frederiksen emphasized Denmark’s commitment to enhancing its protective role in the Arctic region. She echoed the sentiments of Greenland’s Prime Minister, Mute Egede, who made it clear that Greenland is not for sale.

While Trump has yet to publicly respond to the call, he shared a 2019 survey on his TruthSocial account revealing that a significant 68% of Greenlanders are in favor of independence from Denmark. This has raised expectations for a potential referendum on Greenland’s status, with Denmark pledging to respect the outcome.

This isn’t the first time Trump has shown interest in Greenland. He previously proposed buying the island, a suggestion that Frederiksen described as “absurd.” This led to the abrupt cancellation of his planned trip to Denmark.

In the recent conversation, Frederiksen also highlighted the contributions of Danish firms to the US economy, noting the shared commercial interests between the EU and the US.

Trump had previously threatened to impose high tariffs on Denmark if Greenland was not relinquished, which alarmed Danish business leaders given that the US is Denmark’s second-largest export market.

In light of the current situation, Frederiksen is set to convene a “crisis meeting” with major business leaders, including chief executives of prominent firms like Carlsberg and Novo Nordisk. An extraordinary Foreign Policy Council meeting will also take place with parliamentary members to discuss the unfolding events.

Greenlandic MP Aaja Chemnitz expressed confidence in Frederiksen’s approach, affirming that any decisions regarding Greenland should involve its citizens. Meanwhile, opposition MP Rasmus Jarlov criticized Frederiksen’s stance, arguing that she should not yield Denmark’s sovereignty over Greenland to local self-governance when addressing the US President.

Excitement and concern over Trump’s focus on Greenland have left many in Denmark anxious about maintaining relations with what Frederiksen has referred to as “Denmark’s closest ally.” Political analyst Hans Redder remarked that the length of the call indicates that Greenland is a significant concern for Trump, rather than just a fleeting interest.
