Did you know that nearly 14 million citizens of Pakistan, or 6.2% of the population, are living with disabilities? However, this number could be even higher, as the current data collection system for the national census is flawed. But thanks to a flagship initiative by the government, the National Disability Survey Module PSLM 2019, we’re getting closer to an accurate picture.
Living with disabilities in rural Pakistan can be especially tough, as they often lack the resources to become productive members of society. As Mr. Nadeem Ahmed, Social Policy Advisor of the Federal Ministry of Planning Development and Special Initiatives, said, “We must respect and appreciate diversity and ensure no one is left behind.” By working together, we can break down these barriers and achieve an international standard of disability rights and resources in Pakistan.
It’s time to take action and turn our words into tangible results. After all, a fair income, visibility, safe working conditions, and equality are things that everyone deserves – and that includes our friends and neighbors with disabilities. So let’s roll up our sleeves and get to work!
