Donald Trump’s Inauguration Plans Altered by Cold Weather as Fans and Family Gather

President-elect Donald Trump arrived in the Washington area on Saturday evening to celebrate his return to power ahead of his upcoming inauguration, which has been affected by unusually cold temperatures. The former president flew on an Air Force plane sent by outgoing President Joe Biden from his home in Palm Beach, Florida, where he had prepared for his transition after winning the November election against Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris. Trump was joined by his wife Melania, daughter Ivanka, and son-in-law Jared Kushner during the flight.

Upon arriving at Dulles Airport in suburban Virginia, Trump traveled to his golf club in Sterling, Virginia, located just outside Washington. There, an Elvis Presley impersonator, Leo Days, serenaded the incoming first family before a reception for about 500 guests and a fireworks display. A video posted by one of Trump’s aides showed the Trumps watching as the performer sang.

On Sunday, the day before his inauguration, Trump is scheduled to hold a rally for his supporters at the Capital One Arena in downtown Washington. He will also host a post-inauguration event on Monday afternoon. The cold weather forecast prompted Trump to make adjustments to the inauguration plans. The ceremony, originally set to take place on the iconic west front of the U.S. Capitol, will now be moved indoors to the Capitol Rotunda. Additionally, the parade, which was supposed to proceed down Pennsylvania Avenue, will now be relocated to the Capital One Arena.

The inauguration will begin at 12 p.m. ET (1700 GMT) with Trump taking the oath of office in the Capitol Rotunda, followed by his inaugural address. Trump told NBC News that his speech will focus on the themes of “unity,” “strength,” and “fairness.” This will be the first time since Ronald Reagan’s second inauguration in 1985 that the event has been moved indoors due to weather conditions.

Due to the relocation, many of the 220,000 ticketed guests who were originally planning to watch the event on the Capitol grounds will be unable to attend. Only a small portion of the crowd will be accommodated in the 20,000-seat Capital One Arena, where the inauguration will be broadcast. Performances from entertainers and parade participants are also expected.

For many Trump supporters who traveled to Washington for the event, the changes to the inauguration plans are disappointing. Arthur and Richard Caisse, who came from Connecticut, expressed frustration after securing tickets to the inauguration, only to be told they might not be able to watch the ceremony. Despite the setback, Richard remained optimistic, saying, “We’re getting our country back.”

Other supporters, like Debbie Koch from Wisconsin, are still hopeful of attending Trump’s rally at the Capital One Arena on Sunday night, although they’re unsure if they’ll be able to get in.

The Secret Service was asked about managing the crowd of ticket holders who won’t be able to attend the ceremony or fit into the arena, but they referred the question to event organizers. Trump’s inauguration committee did not respond to requests for further information on Saturday.

Once Trump returns to the White House on Monday afternoon, he is expected to begin signing a series of executive orders aimed at addressing key priorities such as immigration policy and U.S. energy production.

Trump, who served from 2017 to 2021, had chosen not to attend the inauguration of Joe Biden after being defeated in the 2020 election. Instead, he left Washington for Florida, pledging, “we will be back in some form.” His supporters had stormed the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, in an effort to prevent the certification of Biden’s victory.

Biden is expected to attend Trump’s inauguration ceremony on Monday.
