French government bulldozes pension reform bill without vote

French President Emmanuel Macron’s government has pushed through a controversial pension reform without a vote in parliament, causing outrage and protests in Paris and other cities.

The government used a special constitutional power to pass the legislation, as it lacked the support to raise the retirement age from 62 to 64. Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne announced the move amid jeers and boos from opposition MPs, who also sang the national anthem.

Thousands of protesters gathered in central Paris to express their anger, with police using tear gas and water cannon to disperse the crowd after a fire was lit.
