Hamas Welcomes Trump’s Reversal on Gaza Displacement Plan Amid Ongoing Tensions

Hamas spokesperson Hazem Qassem has expressed cautious optimism following US President Donald Trump’s apparent retreat from his controversial proposal to permanently displace over two million Palestinians from Gaza. The shift came after Trump clarified on Wednesday that “nobody is expelling any Palestinians from Gaza,” following a question during a meeting with Ireland’s Taoiseach Micheal Martin at the White House.

In a statement, Qassem welcomed Trump’s reversal, saying, “If US President Trump’s statements represent a retreat from any idea of displacing the people of the Gaza Strip, they are welcomed.” He also urged that this position be reinforced by Israel adhering to all terms of the ceasefire agreements currently in place.

This development comes after Trump stirred significant controversy last month by suggesting a US-led takeover of Gaza and the permanent relocation of its Palestinian residents to neighboring countries. His proposal had already sparked widespread alarm and condemnation across the Middle East.

Trump’s apparent change of heart was well-received by Egypt, which shares a border with Gaza. The Egyptian Foreign Ministry issued a statement on Thursday expressing appreciation for Trump’s remarks, viewing them as a step toward preventing further deterioration of Gaza’s humanitarian crisis and fostering more sustainable solutions to the Palestinian issue.

In parallel, the political landscape surrounding Gaza is evolving. On Wednesday, Arab foreign ministers met in Qatar to discuss a comprehensive reconstruction plan for Gaza, following approval at the Arab League Summit in Cairo. These talks, involving countries like Qatar, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia, aim to establish a foundation for rebuilding Gaza under Palestinian Authority administration, as a direct response to Trump’s previous threats.

Additionally, diplomatic efforts continue with direct talks between Hamas and US negotiators, including discussions on a phased ceasefire agreement with Israel. These unprecedented talks have marked a departure from Washington’s long-standing policy of refusing to engage with groups designated as “terrorist organizations.”

With ceasefire negotiations ongoing and the international community mobilizing for Gaza’s reconstruction, the situation remains fluid. However, the potential for a more stable, peaceful future hinges on the commitment of all parties involved to follow through on diplomatic agreements and humanitarian efforts.
