India Approves Construction of New Class of Nuclear-Powered Attack Submarines

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

India has given the green light to build two new nuclear-powered attack submarines at an estimated cost of $5.4 billion, as part of efforts to bolster its military capabilities in response to China’s increasing presence in the Indian Ocean region. The decision reflects India’s focus on enhancing naval strength and domestic weapons production. The submarines, which are expected to be faster, quieter, and have longer underwater endurance than conventional diesel-powered vessels, are seen as a significant addition to India’s naval arsenal.

The construction of the submarines will take place at the government’s shipbuilding center in Visakhapatnam, with Larsen and Toubro expected to participate in the project. These new submarines will differ from the Arihant-class nuclear-powered submarines that India is currently developing, as they will not be equipped for launching nuclear weapons.
