Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, recently made a social media post expressing surprise at India’s lack of a permanent seat in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). The United States has taken note of this comment, as reported by Hindustan Times. Musk, who is set to visit India this month, believes that powerful nations are hesitant to relinquish power. He stated that it was “absurd” that India doesn’t have a permanent seat at the UNSC. “At some point, there needs to be a revision of the UN bodies,” Musk said in a post on X (formerly known as Twitter) in January. “The problem is that those with excess power don’t want to give it up. India not having a permanent seat on the Security Council, despite being the most populous country on Earth, is absurd. Africa collectively should also have a permanent seat, in.” During a press conference on Wednesday, US State Department Principal Deputy Spokesperson Vedant Patel highlighted the need for reforms in the United Nations bodies, including the UNSC, without providing any specifics. The UNSC comprises 15 member states, including five permanent members with veto power and ten non-permanent members elected by the UN General Assembly for two terms. The five states with veto power include the United Kingdom, the US, France, and Russia.
