Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently announced that he received a call from Muhammad Yunus, the head of Bangladesh’s caretaker government, who assured India of the protection and security of Hindus in Bangladesh. This assurance came after a series of violent attacks targeted homes, businesses, and temples of Hindus in Bangladesh following Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s departure from the country amidst widespread protests.

The situation escalated to a school teacher being killed and at least 45 people being injured. In the midst of these events, Nobel Peace laureate Yunus personally contacted Modi to affirm the safety and security of Hindus and all minorities in Bangladesh. Modi, in a social media post, reiterated India’s support for a democratic, stable, peaceful, and progressive Bangladesh.

The Hindu community makes up about 8% of Bangladesh’s 170 million people and has historically aligned itself with Hasina’s largely secular Awami League party. The ongoing violence has caused unrest among the Hindu population, with reports of hundreds attempting to flee to India to escape the targeting.

The communal violence has impacted a significant portion of Bangladesh, with at least 52 out of the country’s 64 districts affected since Sheikh Hasina’s departure. This has raised concerns globally, especially in neighboring India, which has cultural and business ties with Bangladesh and has expressed worries about the attacks on minorities and their places of worship and livelihood.
