KARACHI — A wave of public outrage and grief has swept across Pakistan following the horrific sexual assault and murder of an 18-month-old child in Karachi’s Qayyumabad neighborhood, prompting prominent public figures and actors to demand immediate justice and structural accountability.
According to the First Information Report (FIR) filed by the victim’s father, the toddler was taken out by a relative to purchase food. Upon their return, the child was found unconscious and subsequently rushed to a private medical facility before being transferred to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, where she succumbed to her injuries. Police have since arrested the relative—a 17-year-old male residing with the family—on charges of rape and murder.
The brutal incident has drawn sharp condemnation from Pakistan’s arts and entertainment community, with several prominent figures speaking out against systemic failures in child protection:
- Adnan Siddiqui expressed deep anguish over the age of both the victim and the teenage suspect, stating he felt “disgusted and heartbroken” by the tragedy. ” There are no words left. Only rage, grief, and shame that we have come to this,” Siddiqui said, calling for swift, uncompromising legal action.
- Ayesha Omar condemned the worsening social environment, noting that the nation had reached “the lowest of lows” and urging society to collectively address the root causes of child abuse. “We cannot go on like this anymore,” she emphasised.
- Sanam Baloch highlighted the psychological toll on the victim’s family, stating as a mother that she could not fathom their trauma, while reinforcing that the safety of the nation’s children must remain paramount.
- Srha Asghar and Zhalay Sarhadi also voiced distress, with Asghar criticising the recurring frequency of child abuse stories across the country.
