Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Saudi Arabia stunned two-time winners Argentina 2-1 in the biggest upset of FIFA World Cup 2022 group C opener in Lusail Stadium.

Lionel Messi scored the opening goal for Argentina on penalty shootout in the 10th minute.

Argentina lead 1-0 after the first half.

In a chaotic start to the second half, the Saudis swarmed all over Lionel Scaloni’s team and scored twice as the Arab Nation beat the South Americans for the first time in five attempts.

Saleh al-Shehri equalised early in the second half for Saudi Arabia.

Salem al-Dawsari hit a stunning winner to sink the red-hot favourites, bringing the South American side’s 36-match unbeaten run to a shuddering halt.

Argentina, who were one of the favourites to win the World Cup, would have equalled Italy’s record of 37 matches unbeaten had they avoided defeat in the Lusail Stadium.

Saudi Arabia are ranked 51st in the FIFA World rankings.
