Mourning Lost Voices: Outcry Over Twitter’s Purge

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

WASHINGTON (AP) — Emily Reed, grieving the loss of her younger sister Jessica a decade ago, has relied on visits to Jessica’s Twitter profile to “keep her memory alive” and find solace. However, Emily’s connection was abruptly severed when Twitter initiated a sweeping purge of dormant accounts, erasing Jessica’s digital presence.

The announcement of this purge by owner Elon Musk sparked outrage among those who have already lost or fear losing the cherished thoughts and words of their deceased loved ones, preserved in now-inactive accounts.

Reacting to the news, Reed hurriedly returned to Jessica’s page, only to be confronted with an unsettling “account suspended” message, hinting at a possible violation of Twitter’s rules.

Reed’s tweet sharing her distress over the vanishing account struck a chord with thousands, who echoed her anguish at the loss of a digital tribute to their departed family members.

“The preservation of these digital footprints is of utmost importance to me,” expressed Reed, 43, in an interview with The Associated Press.
