Pakistan’s Alternate Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, reaffirmed the country’s unwavering stance on Kashmir, emphasizing its position based on UN resolutions. He also highlighted the critical importance of a peaceful and stable Afghanistan for ensuring regional harmony.
During the flag installation ceremony marking Pakistan’s eighth term (2025-26) as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, Ambassador Iftikhar shared Pakistan’s commitment to the core principles of the UN Charter, including the promotion of international peace, security, and the right to self-determination. Pakistan’s active participation in the Security Council aims to contribute to addressing global challenges and supporting peaceful solutions to conflicts.
As part of the ceremony, the flags of the five new non-permanent members—Pakistan, Denmark, Greece, Panama, and Somalia—were raised at the UN Headquarters in New York. These countries replaced Japan, Ecuador, Malta, Mozambique, and Switzerland, whose terms ended on December 31, 2024.
In his address, Ambassador Iftikhar emphasized Pakistan’s ongoing dedication to multilateralism, conflict prevention, and peacebuilding efforts, noting that Pakistan would work closely with other Security Council members to promote just and peaceful solutions to global issues. He also stressed the importance of addressing the root causes of conflict and supporting diplomatic dialogue.

Pakistan’s future contributions will include presiding over the Security Council in July and serving on the ISIS and Al-Qaeda Sanctions Committee. As a member of the powerful Security Council, Pakistan is committed to upholding international law and ensuring the effective implementation of Security Council resolutions.
Additionally, Ambassador Iftikhar discussed Pakistan’s improving security situation and positive economic indicators, while acknowledging the resurgence of terrorism. He reiterated Pakistan’s clear position on Afghanistan, emphasizing that regional stability is deeply connected to a peaceful Afghanistan.
Reflecting on his role at the UN, Ambassador Iftikhar expressed pride in representing Pakistan, assuring that the country’s mission remains steadfast in promoting peace and eliminating terrorism.
