On the 76th anniversary of the United Nations’ resolution supporting Kashmir’s right to self-determination, President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reiterated Pakistan’s unwavering commitment to backing the Kashmiri people in their struggle. This annual observance emphasizes the need for a free and fair plebiscite in Jammu and Kashmir, as outlined by the UN Security Council’s historic 1949 resolution.
The leaders of Pakistan condemned India’s ongoing denial of Kashmiris’ inalienable rights and its brutal actions in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), especially since India’s controversial August 5, 2019, decision to alter the region’s demographic and political makeup. President Zardari highlighted the oppression faced by Kashmiris under Indian occupation, noting the systemic violence and human rights abuses perpetrated over the last seven decades. He called on the international community, especially the UN, to fulfill its obligation to support Kashmiris’ right to self-determination and stop India’s violations.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also voiced grave concerns, stressing the importance of international action to halt human rights abuses in IIOJK. He emphasized that the right to self-determination, as enshrined in the UN Charter, remains a core principle of international law. Despite India’s continued efforts to consolidate its occupation, PM Sharif reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to supporting Kashmir’s legitimate struggle for freedom.
On this significant day, Kashmiris around the world are participating in rallies, seminars, and conferences, calling on the UN to implement its resolutions and resolve the Kashmir dispute. In Azad Jammu and Kashmir, a special legislative session will be held to draw attention to India’s human rights violations in the region.
