PMLN is doing politics of power than principles: Shahid Khaqan Abbasi

Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, a former Prime Minister and ex-leader of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), has accused his former party of opting for “power politics at all costs”. During an interview with Geo News’ program “Jirga” aired on Saturday, he expressed his disagreement with the politics that PML-N had chosen in 2022.

Abbasi clarified that he had resigned from the party post the appointment of Maryam Nawaz as senior vice president and chief organizer last year. He also mentioned that he had informed the PML-N leadership a year ago that he would not contest the next election from the platform of the Sharifs party.

In response to a question, Abbasi said that he had not attended any PML-N meeting after resigning from the party. He also said that he was a member of the “Muslim League” even before the establishment of PML-N, claiming that they had contested the 2002 elections against the establishment.

Abbasi expressed ignorance over the reports that PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif had gone abroad and then returned to the country under any deal. Earlier this month, Abbasi approached the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) for the registration of a new political party. He submitted relevant documents to the poll organizing authority’s office for the registration of a new political party.

Abbasi had also announced that he would take part in the next elections under the banner of his new party. With this move, Abbasi has distanced himself from PML-N, which he believed had opted for “power politics at all costs”.
