PTI Chairman raises red flag over security threat

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan made a startling claim on Wednesday, alleging that the government has formed two squads to conduct an operation inside Zaman Park, with plans to kill people as they did in the Model Town incident in 2014.

Speaking to his party workers and supporters via video link from his Lahore residence, Khan claimed that the government is planning to mingle with PTI workers and fire at policemen, and has set its sights on killing five police personnel.

Khan, who was ousted by a no-confidence motion in April last year and has been recuperating since an assassination attempt in Wazirabad in November 2022, urged PTI supporters to avoid conflict, despite security forces’ repeated attempts to provoke them.

“We are not looking for conflict,” he said. “Don’t get involved, don’t let them provoke you.”

It should be noted that the Model Town incident in 2014 resulted in the deaths of at least 14 people and left more than 100 others injured during an ‘anti-encroachment operation’ outside Idara Minhajul Quran in Lahore.

Khan’s allegations come as political tensions continue to simmer in Pakistan, with the government cracking down on opposition parties and dissenting voices.
