PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar confirms meeting with COAS General Munir; optimistic about positive outcomes for party concerns
RAWALPINDI: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Barrister Gohar, in a significant development, confirmed on Thursday that he and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur met with Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Asim Munir. This marks a shift from earlier denials regarding the meeting, which had raised speculation.
Speaking to journalists at the Adiala Jail courtroom, Gohar acknowledged the talks with General Munir, explaining that the PTI leadership had used the opportunity to present their party’s demands and concerns directly to the military chief. “We discussed all of PTI’s priorities and issues during the meeting,” he confirmed. Gohar called the direct engagement with the military establishment a positive step toward resolving the ongoing political challenges.
Earlier, PTI founder Imran Khan had also confirmed the meeting, expressing that his party had been trying for a long time to engage the military leadership in dialogue. Sources revealed that Gohar and Gandapur were flown to Peshawar via helicopter to meet with COAS Munir during his visit to the province.
The meeting occurred in the context of ongoing backchannel talks between the government and PTI, which had temporarily paused but are now reportedly at a crucial juncture. According to informed sources, this high-level meeting involved key political figures and occurred on Monday, though the location was kept private.

In addition to confirming the talks, Gohar aligned with Imran Khan’s earlier statements about the importance of these meetings for moving forward. “What Imran Khan has said about my meeting with the COAS is correct,” he remarked during a conversation with Geo News.
Meanwhile, political discussions between the PTI and the government continue, with PTI presenting written demands for investigation into the events surrounding the May 9, 2023, and November 24, 2024 protests. The party has called for the establishment of independent commissions, headed by either the Chief Justice or three senior Supreme Court judges, to look into these matters. Furthermore, PTI is pressing for the federal and provincial governments to support court orders granting bail or suspending sentences for political prisoners.

As the political temperature rises in Pakistan, the outcome of these talks and PTI’s future approach will be pivotal in determining the trajectory of the country’s political landscape. The key to success will lie in PTI’s ability to shift away from confrontation and embrace constructive engagement with the government and other political stakeholders.
