Contract teachers from across Punjab held a sit-in in Lahore, demanding permanent positions in the teaching profession. The protest was well-attended, with hundreds of miles and teachers participating. Despite efforts by the government to address their concerns, many teachers feel that their basic problems have not been adequately addressed.
In response to the protest, the Minister for Education, Murad Ras, held a meeting with the teachers to discuss the issue of regularization. The meeting was also attended by Ministers Raja Basharat and Raja Yasir Humayun, as well as members of a committee formed by the Chief Minister of Punjab, Mr Pervaiz Elahi.
During the meeting, the education minister assured the teachers that their issues would be resolved. It is not clear at this time when or how the issues will be addressed. However, the contract teachers are hopeful that their demands for permanent positions will be met in the near future.
