Socrates, the Athenian philosopher who lived from 470 to 399 B.C.E., remains one of the most influential figures in Western intellectual history. Renowned for his questioning method, known as the Socratic method, and his emphasis on critical thinking, Socrates challenged the status quo and laid the foundation for many philosophical schools of thought.
Life and Legacy
Socrates was born into a middle-class family in Athens. He served as a hoplite, a heavily-armed foot soldier, during the Peloponnesian War and participated in several battles. He later married Xanthippe, who bore him three sons. Despite being married, Socrates is known to have engaged in frequent dialogues with young men, which sometimes aroused suspicion and criticism.
Socrates himself did not write anything down, so our knowledge of his life and teachings comes primarily from his students, particularly Plato and Xenophon. Plato’s dialogues, in particular, portray Socrates as a relentless questioner who used logic and reason to expose inconsistencies in people’s thinking.
Socrates’ questioning method, also known as elenchus, involved asking a series of seemingly innocent questions to expose the flaws in someone’s argument and ultimately lead them to a deeper understanding of the truth. This method became a cornerstone of Western education and continues to be used in classrooms today.
Philosophy and Teachings
Socrates believed that the unexamined life is not worth living. He encouraged people to question their assumptions and beliefs, to think critically about themselves and the world around them. He believed that true knowledge could only be attained through rigorous questioning and examination.
One of Socrates’ most famous teachings is the Delphic maxim: “Know thyself.” He believed that self-knowledge is essential for living a good and virtuous life. He argued that to improve ourselves, we must first understand our own limitations and biases.
Socrates also emphasized the importance of virtue. He believed that happiness comes from living a virtuous life, which means living in accordance with reason and morality. He identified four cardinal virtues: wisdom, courage, temperance, and justice.

Trial and Death
Socrates’ questioning often made him unpopular with powerful figures in Athens. He was eventually accused of impiety and corrupting the youth. He was put on trial and sentenced to death by drinking hemlock.
Socrates’ death marked a turning point in Athenian history. It solidified his reputation as a martyr for truth and justice, and his teachings continued to influence philosophers and thinkers for centuries to come.
Critical Evaluation
It is important to note that Socrates’ life and teachings have been subject to much debate and interpretation over the centuries. Some scholars have argued that Plato, in his portrayal of Socrates, idealized his teacher and downplayed his own contributions to philosophy. Others have questioned the extent to which Socrates’ teachings were truly original, as many of his ideas seem to have been influenced by earlier Greek philosophers.
Despite these criticisms, there is no doubt that Socrates remains a pivotal figure in the history of Western thought. His emphasis on critical thinking, questioning, and self-knowledge has had a profound impact on generations of thinkers and continues to be relevant today.
