According to a report released by Transparency International, Pakistan has recently made significant progress in corruption-based rankings. Pakistan has come down to 133 out of 180 countries in 2023, earlier Pakistan was ranked 140 in corruption. Pakistan has achieved a significant reduction of 7 ranks in corruption. The increase in the CPI score from 27 to 29 reflects positive progress in tackling corruption and indicates a gradual but meaningful shift towards better governance in the country.

Pakistan’s CPI score reached 29 in 2023, up from 27 in 2022, showing an encouraging trend. The fact that neighboring India has seen its CPI score drop from 40 to 39 over the same period underscores Pakistan’s improvement in the fight against corruption.

TIP Chairman, Justice (Retd) Zia Pervez rightly recognized the impact of policies focused on law enforcement and governance. In his remarks, he highlighted that the improvement in Pakistan’s CPI score was a result of policies aimed at better governance and effective law enforcement. This suggests that the implementation of Transparency International’s recommendations is gradually yielding positive results and is likely to continue to do so in the future.

It is important to note that the global outlook remains challenging, with the CPI global average stagnating at 43 for the twelfth year in a row. More than two-thirds of countries still score below 50, indicating a widespread problem. According to the Rule of Law Index, the decline in the functioning of justice systems around the world is contributing to this challenge. Countries with low scores on this index also score poorly on the CPI, indicating a significant relationship between access to justice and corruption.

Pakistan’s rise in CPI amid a global scenario of minimal growth indicates the country’s determination to tackle corruption. While the global landscape faces challenges, Pakistan’s progress demonstrates its determination to combat corruption through effective governance and law enforcement. In order to sustain this positive momentum and ensure accountability going forward, efforts to strengthen institutions, uphold the rule of law and implement anti-corruption measures will be critical.
