Trump ramps up Zelenskyy attacks as US official says mineral deal close

U.S. President Donald Trump has continued his criticism of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, while a White House official announced that a deal granting the U.S. access to Ukraine’s rare earth minerals was close to being finalized.

Trump’s latest remarks have intensified tensions, leaving both Ukraine and Washington’s European allies unsettled. His criticism comes as his administration shifts its approach to the conflict, including a recent high-level meeting between U.S. and Russian officials.

In an interview with Fox News Radio, Trump dismissed the idea that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine was solely Vladimir Putin’s fault. When host Brian Kilmeade made this claim, Trump responded, “I get tired of listening to it, I’ll tell you what.”

Trump also criticized Zelenskyy, saying he was “negotiating with no cards” and downplayed Kyiv’s frustration over being excluded from recent U.S.-Russia discussions. “He’s been at meetings for three years and got nothing, so I don’t think he’s very important to be at meetings, to be honest,” he said. He later repeated his criticisms during a meeting with U.S. governors.

Meanwhile, White House National Security Adviser Mike Waltz said he expected Ukraine to sign an agreement soon, allowing the U.S. access to its rare earth minerals in exchange for continued military and economic support. The U.S. has been pressuring Kyiv to accept the deal, with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent previously traveling to Ukraine to negotiate a 50% U.S. stake in the country’s mineral resources, a proposal Zelenskyy initially rejected. “President Zelenskyy is going to sign that deal very soon, and that is good for Ukraine,” Waltz said at a conference near Washington, D.C.

Trump’s escalating criticism of Zelenskyy signals a shift away from the Biden administration’s approach, which focused on strengthening transatlantic alliances and providing unwavering support for Ukraine. The Trump administration has taken a different stance, with U.S. Defense Chief Pete Hegseth recently telling NATO allies that Ukraine must accept it will not regain the territories lost to Russia since 2014 and that NATO membership is off the table.

Critics argue that this position effectively grants Russia major concessions before peace negotiations have even begun.

Following a U.S.-Russia meeting in Saudi Arabia earlier this week, both sides agreed to begin preliminary peace discussions. Shortly afterward, Trump suggested that Ukraine “should have never started” the war. Zelenskyy responded the next day, accusing Trump of operating in a “disinformation space.”
