Following a decisive victory in the recent election, Keir Starmer is set to assume leadership as Britain’s new Prime Minister, ushering in a Parliament that is more ethnically diverse and includes a record number of female lawmakers. The election outcome marks the end of a 14-year Conservative rule and reflects a significant shift in the composition of the House of Commons.
With the upcoming parliament, Black, Asian, and ethnic minority lawmakers will make up approximately 13 percent of the House of Commons, a notable increase from the 10 percent representation in 2019. This boost represents the highest-ever share of ethnic minority members in the lower house, signifying a significant milestone in the country’s political landscape.
While the increase in minority representation is a substantial step forward, it still falls short of fully mirroring the population and electorate’s diversity. Official data indicates that around 18 percent of individuals in England and Wales originate from a Black, Asian, mixed, or ethnic minority background, underscoring the ongoing need for further progress in achieving comprehensive representation.
Sunder Katwala, director of British Future, emphasized the significance of this shift, highlighting the record diversity in Parliament and its closer alignment with the electorate. This momentous occasion coincides with Rishi Sunak’s tenure as the UK’s first British Asian Prime Minister, underscoring the normalization of ethnic diversity within the main political parties.

In addition to increased minority representation, the incoming parliament will also welcome a record 242 female lawmakers, marking a substantial increase from the previous election in 2019. This surge in female representation underscores a noteworthy progression in gender parity within the political sphere.
Furthermore, while the final election results are pending, the Labour party’s sweeping victory is anticipated to secure around 412 seats, effectively establishing a majority of 174. Notably, Labour will boast the largest number of ethnic minority MPs, with 66 out of the 87 elected members, signifying a significant stride in achieving diversity within the governing body.
