Poetry is a form of literature that employs aesthetic and rhythmic grades of language to evoke meanings and emotions in the readers. Poetry is considered to be one of the most sublime and expressive genres of literature, as it can convey complex and profound ideas with minimal words, create vivid and lasting images in the mind, and appeal to the senses and emotions of the audience. Poetry can also enrich the human experience by providing insights into different cultures, perspectives, and experiences, as well as fostering creativity, imagination, and empathy. Poetry is momentous for the aesthetical pleasure of humans for multiple linguistic, cultural and aesthetical reasons.
Poetry can create beauty and harmony by employing sound devices, such as rhyme, rhythm, alliteration, assonance, and onomatopoeia. These devices can enhance the musicality and melody of the language, as well as create patterns and associations that make the poem more memorable and enjoyable. For example, in the poem “The Bells” by Edgar Allan Poe, the poet uses repetition, rhyme, and onomatopoeia to create a symphony of sounds that mimic the ringing of different bells. Poetry can use figurative language, such as metaphor, simile, personification, hyperbole, and symbolism, to create vivid and imaginative images that appeal to the visual sense of the readers. Figurative language can also help the poet to express abstract or complex concepts in a more concrete and relatable way, as well as to create comparisons and contrasts that highlight the meaning and theme of the poem. For example, in the poem “I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud” by William Wordsworth, the poet uses simile and personification to compare himself to a lonely cloud and the daffodils to a crowd of dancing people, creating a contrast between his solitude and their joy.

Poetry can use word choice, tone, mood, and voice to convey emotions and attitudes that appeal to the affective sense of the readers. Poetry can also elicit emotional responses from the readers by making them empathize with the poet or the speaker of the poem or by creating a particular atmosphere or philosophy that influences their feelings. For example, in the poem “Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night” by Dylan Thomas, the poet uses word choice, repetition, and rhyme to express his anger and grief over his father’s impending death, as well as his urge for him to resist and fight against it. Poetry is also considered to be sublime among all literary genres because it can transcend the ordinary and mundane aspects of reality and create a sense of awe and wonder in the readers.
Furthermore, poetry can explore universal themes and questions that relate to the human condition, such as love, death, nature, identity, morality, spirituality, etc. Poetry can also challenge or affirm the values and beliefs of the readers by presenting different perspectives or arguments on these topics. For example, in the poem “If” by Rudyard Kipling, the poet offers a set of moral guidelines for living a virtuous and successful life. Poetry can experiment with language and form to create new and innovative ways of expression and communication. Poetry can also break or bend the rules of grammar, syntax, punctuation, etc., to create effects that are unique and original. For example, in the poem “Anyone Lived in a Pretty How Town” by E.E. Cummings, the poet operates unconventional capitalization, spacing, word order, etc., to create a playful and whimsical style that contrasts with the tragic story of the poem.

Poetry can inspire creativity and imagination in both the poet and the reader by allowing them to explore different possibilities and scenarios that are not bound by logic or reality. Poetry can also stimulate curiosity and inquiry by inviting the reader to interpret and analyze the meaning and message of the poem. For example, in the poem “Jabberwocky” by Lewis Carroll, the poet invents new words and creatures that create a fantastical world that challenges the reader’s imagination.
Then, poetry is an aesthetical pleasure of the sub-continent, where it is associated with religion, society and culture. The local languages are incarnated for poetic rhythm and innovation. There is a unique taste and decency for Urdu poetry. Instead, Urdu poetry has been the medium for aesthetical, cultural or even political expression and countenance. Further, Punjabi poetry is epical for its design, grandeur and majesty. The Sufi and mystical poetry in Punjabi transcends human existence into cultural and expressional divinity. Therefore, the universality and magnificence of Punjabi poetry are for all times and ages. It is not only a rare poetic expression but a philosophy to lead a life of values, wisdom and comprehension.
