Government Dismisses Wheat Shortage Concerns

[post-views]

Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research Rana Tanveer Hussain said on Tuesday that Pakistan has enough wheat reserves to meet the country’s needs, rejecting reports of any possible shortage.

The statement came during the 12th high-level meeting of the National Wheat Oversight Committee, where officials reviewed wheat procurement, available stocks, market conditions, and the overall food security situation across the country.

Senior officials from the ministry, provincial agriculture departments, PASSCO, and other related institutions attended the meeting. Participants were briefed on wheat stocks held by public sector agencies, procurement activities underway in different provinces, and arrangements for smooth inter-provincial supply.

The committee also examined domestic consumption requirements, strategic reserves, and current market trends. Officials informed the minister that wheat reserves were at satisfactory levels and ongoing procurement operations would further strengthen national buffer stocks in the coming weeks.

Rana Tanveer said claims regarding a wheat crisis were unfounded and not backed by official figures. He added that coordination between federal and provincial authorities was helping maintain stable wheat supplies and prices.

The minister also directed departments to improve transparency in stock reporting and closely monitor procurement operations to prevent artificial price increases in the market.
