The Finance Committee of the National Assembly has approved a proposal to raise the salaries and benefits of Members of the National Assembly (MNAs) and Senators to Rs 519,000 per month. This adjustment aligns their compensation with that of federal secretaries and brings it in line with the benefits received by members of the Punjab Assembly.

Sources within the parliament revealed that the Finance Committee, in a meeting with the National Assembly speaker, endorsed the salary increase. The NA Speaker then forwarded the recommendations to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for final approval.

While MPs had initially requested a salary of Rs 1 million per month, NA Speaker Ayaz Sadiq rejected this demand. It’s worth noting that the last salary increase for parliamentarians occurred seven years ago, with a modest Rs 15,000 rise.

Members from all major political parties, including the PPP, PML-N, and PTI, have supported the salary increase, with senior party officials meeting informally with the NA Speaker to advocate for the adjustment. However, no formal public statement has been made about the decision yet.
