LAHORE: Police detained Aleema Khan, sister of jailed former prime minister Imran Khan, at her residence in Lahore on Sunday, September 20, ahead of a protest march planned by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) for September 27.
A PTI spokesperson in Punjab confirmed her arrest. According to a notification issued by the Lahore district administration, Aleema Khan has been ordered to remain in detention for 30 days.
The administration cited intelligence reports in support of the decision, claiming that her presence in public could pose a serious threat to public safety.
PTI has announced plans to march towards Islamabad on September 27 to demand the release of its imprisoned founder, Imran Khan.
The arrest follows a warning from Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, who said on Saturday that the government would take all possible measures to prevent the planned demonstration.
Zulfi Bukhari, a close associate of Imran Khan, strongly condemned Aleema Khan’s detention, describing it as “absolutely despicable”.
Bukhari suggested that the authorities’ response reflected growing concern over the forthcoming protest.
