General Waker-Uz-Zaman of the Bangladesh army announced on Wednesday that a new interim government is expected to be sworn in on Thursday evening following the return of Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus to the country.
In a televised briefing, General Waker expressed his confidence in Yunus, stating, “I am certain that he will be able to guide us through a positive democratic process, and we will all benefit from this.” According to Nahid Islam, a leader of Students Against Discrimination who attended the meeting, Yunus will play a pivotal role as the chief adviser in the new government.
General Waker also mentioned that efforts are underway to hold the oath-taking ceremony the following day, with a projected attendance of around 400 people. “I am very eager to do this,” the general added in a televised address, emphasizing his unwavering belief in Yunus’s ability to lead the democratic process.

Yunus’s return was preceded by a call to his fellow citizens to “be ready to build the country” in a statement, emphasizing the importance of maintaining calm and avoiding violence. The decision to appoint Yunus was a result of a unified meeting involving President Mohammed Shahabuddin, military heads, and student leaders, as announced by the president’s office.
