According to local prosecutor Lamine Kabore, around 60 civilians were brutally killed on Friday by individuals disguised in Burkinabe military attire in northern Burkina Faso. Kabore, citing police reports from the town of Ouahigouya, stated on Sunday that the deadly attack happened in the village of Karma located in the Yatenga province near Mali’s border, a region occupied by Islamist factions affiliated with al Qaeda and the Islamic State. The prosecutor announced that an inquiry into the assault had been initiated, but no further information has been provided on the matter.

Human Rights Watch stated in March that since 2022, there has been a sharp increase in attacks on civilians by armed groups, while state security personnel and volunteer defence units have carried out a number of violent counter-terrorism operations. Meanwhile, the government revealed that on April 15, 40 people were killed and 33 others were injured in an assault on the army and volunteer forces in the same region of northern Burkina Faso close to Ouahigouya.
