GQEBERHA, SA: Arming bandits caused mayhem at a fete celebrating a landmark occasion over the weekend in a neighborhood in South Africa, taking the lives of eight and injuring three others, according to law enforcement.

The individual being honored was one of those slain in the indiscriminate assault in the coastal city of Gqeberha, formerly known as Port Elizabeth.

“The host was honoring his natal day when two unfamiliar ruffians infiltrated the premises” on Sunday night “and began discharging their firearms at the attendees,” law enforcement reported.

The shooters “casually fired at the partygoers,” the police explained, further mentioning “eight individuals perished while three others are still battling for survival at the hospital. The homeowner is among the fallen”.

The reasons behind the attack are yet to be disclosed.

Nomthetheleli Mene, the top cop in charge of the Eastern Cape territory, decried the murders as “a bold show of disrespect towards human existence”.

An inquiry has been initiated into the attack and the police confirmed a manhunt for the culprits is in progress.
