Deadly Attack on Riyadh Aviation Hub Marks Major Escalation
At least 12 people were killed and over 300 others injured in a missile attack targeting King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh on Saturday. Marking the deadliest assault within Saudi territory in over a decade, the incident represents a sharp escalation in the military campaign launched by Houthi forces earlier this summer. According to the Saudi General Authority of Civil Aviation, the fatalities included four Saudi nationals, two Bangladeshi citizens, and individuals from the United States, Jordan, Palestine, Syria, Sudan, and Egypt. Authorities confirmed that 309 people sustained injuries, leaving regional medical facilities overwhelmed as emergency services transported victims via ambulances and airlift operations.
International Reactions and Alliance Commitments
In response to the unprecedented strike, the Saudi-led military coalition pledged a decisive operational counter-response. US President Donald Trump announced that Washington is evaluating the possibility of joining direct military strikes against Houthi targets, framing the escalation within the broader regional confrontation stemming from US and Israeli operations in the region. Meanwhile, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif issued a formal condemnation of the attack on Sunday, reaffirming Islamabad’s strategic commitment to the defense and territorial integrity of Saudi Arabia under the framework of the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement.
