In meeting with CJP, PTI claims judiciary being used for political gains

Members of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) met with Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Yahya Afridi, expressing concerns over what they called the “misuse of the judiciary for political purposes.”

PTI Secretary-General Salman Akram Raja, speaking at a press conference after the meeting, criticized the current state of the justice system, stating, “The judiciary is being used as a political tool, turning the justice system into a joke.”

This meeting followed a discussion between the chief justice and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, during which the agenda for the upcoming National Judicial Policymaking Committee (NJPMC) meeting was shared. Several government officials, including Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar, Economic Affairs Minister Ahad Cheema, and Attorney General for Pakistan Mansoor Usman Awan, were also present.

During this discussion, CJP Afridi assured that opposition parties would have a say in judicial reforms, which are aimed at reducing case backlogs and ensuring faster justice. According to a Supreme Court press release, these reforms focus on modernizing the judiciary to make it more fair, transparent, and accessible.

However, PTI leaders were not pleased with the chief justice’s meeting with government officials. Senator Barrister Ali Zafar cautioned the CJP against engaging in politics, saying such meetings create a political impression.

Speaking about PTI’s ongoing legal battles—many of which involve its founder, Imran Khan, who remains behind bars—Salman Akram Raja said the party informed the CJP that their cases were not being heard. He also claimed that “human rights have practically ceased to exist in the country.”

Raja further highlighted how the 26th Constitutional Amendment was forcefully pushed through parliament, arguing that when courts do not address these issues, political struggle remains the only option.

PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar told the media that the party also raised concerns about the abduction of its lawmakers and the failure of authorities to implement court orders. The chief justice, he said, assured them that steps would be taken to address these concerns.

The party also brought up the numerous cases against Imran Khan, including changes in court hearing schedules and restrictions on his meetings. Babar Awan stressed that legal precedence supports open trials instead of hearings inside jail premises.

Omar Ayub accused authorities in Punjab of “state terrorism,” alleging that the police were being used against PTI members. The delegation also discussed Khan’s letters to the CJP and what they claimed were fake FIRs against their lawyers.
