The Israel Prison Service (IPS) announced on Friday that it was taking steps to prevent any public celebrations when Palestinian prisoners are released as part of the Gaza ceasefire deal. In a statement, the IPS confirmed preparations were underway for the release of prisoners in exchange for Israeli hostages held in Gaza, with releases expected to begin as early as Sunday, according to the prime minister’s office.
Two prisons, one near Jerusalem and the other near Ashkelon, have started assembling the prisoners to be freed. The IPS commissioner, Major General Kobi Yakobi, ordered that to avoid public displays of joy, prisoner transport from Ashkelon’s Shikma Prison would not involve civilian buses managed by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), which oversaw the previous exchange in November 2023. Instead, specialized prison service units will handle the transport.

The prisoner swap deal, approved by Israel’s security cabinet on Friday, is set to be reviewed by the full cabinet soon. The deal, which involves the release of Palestinian prisoners in exchange for Israeli hostages, has sparked political controversy. Far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir strongly opposed the deal, urging coalition members to block it. He highlighted the release of Palestinians convicted of killing Israelis, particularly those serving life sentences, as a key concern.
The ceasefire arrangement, which includes the release of 33 hostages over the first 42 days, is part of a broader effort to ease tensions and secure the safe return of captives on both sides.
