As a ceasefire in Gaza is set to begin on Sunday, the relief many feel is tempered by the deep skepticism surrounding Israel’s commitment to the terms of the deal. While the people of Gaza desperately hope for any cessation of hostilities, the political and military complexities of the agreement leave many unanswered questions. Chief among them is whether Israel will truly withdraw from Gaza, a demand central to Hamas’ position, which remains unresolved as the second phase of negotiations looms.
The international community, particularly Israel’s allies, must confront the immediate humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The reported death toll stands at approximately 47,000, though estimates suggest the true number could be even higher. As survivors endure unimaginable suffering—loss of loved ones, trauma, and widespread malnutrition—urgent, unfettered humanitarian aid is essential. Israel must cease its obstruction of such aid, which has been weaponized throughout the war. The international community must push Israel to ensure that humanitarian convoys are not only allowed but safeguarded by an international force.

Furthermore, oversight of funds designated for Gaza’s recovery is critical. Reports of Israel rerouting aid money, including funds from international organizations, highlight the risk of financial exploitation. Any foreign aid directed at rebuilding Gaza must be protected from misuse or diversion by Israel, and there must be transparency in how such funds are allocated.
Israel’s ongoing suppression of media reporting and targeting of intellectuals, medical professionals, and other essential societal figures must also be condemned. The truth about the human toll of this conflict must be freely reported, with no restrictions on the media. Israel should be held accountable for its actions, ensuring that Gaza’s survivors can rebuild their lives with the support they urgently need. The international community must act decisively to prevent Israel from repeating these transgressions in the future.
