Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Government to Take Strong Action Against Miscreants in Kurram to Uphold Peace Agreement

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government announced on Sunday that it would take decisive action against miscreants attempting to disrupt the recently agreed-upon peace pact, emphasizing that such measures were crucial for restoring stability in the region. This decision followed a series of violent incidents, including attacks on relief convoys and a targeted assault on the deputy commissioner of Kurram.

A high-level meeting, chaired by the provincial chief secretary and attended by key officials, including Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Akhtar Hayat Khan, civil and police officers, resulted in the decision to take immediate action. KP government spokesperson Barrister Muhammad Ali Saif confirmed the developments in a statement, calling the action “indispensable” for ensuring the successful implementation of the peace agreement between the two warring tribes in Kurram.

The Kurram district, long plagued by violence, has seen a particularly deadly escalation in recent months. Around 150 people have been killed since November, when two convoys under police escort were ambushed, resulting in the deaths of 40 individuals. Despite a peace agreement reached on January 1, repeated attacks on convoys, including one that targeted Deputy Commissioner Javedullah Mehsud, have continued to threaten stability.

The most recent attack occurred last week when terrorists ambushed a convoy of 35 vehicles carrying essential supplies, including rice, flour, cooking oil, and medicine, for local traders. The ambush resulted in at least eight deaths, including security personnel, drivers, and civilians. In retaliation, security forces killed six of the assailants.

Barrister Saif condemned the actions of miscreants who have “infiltrated” the peaceful population of Kurram, exacerbating tensions. The provincial government has already made provisions for the safe accommodation of people from the affected areas, ensuring that they will be moved to safer locations before the operation begins.

Saif highlighted that the KP government had been working for three months to restore peace to Kurram, but the actions of these miscreants were undermining those efforts. He urged the residents of the affected areas to cooperate fully with the government in the coming days, promising that the miscreants would soon be eliminated and peace would be restored.

However, the KP government’s planned operation faced opposition from Maulana Fazlur Rehman, the leader of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazal (JUI-F). Rehman argued that issues in Kurram could not be solved by force, describing such actions as futile. He proposed that the situation be addressed through a jirga (traditional tribal council) and by involving political leaders. Rehman also expressed his willingness to advise the government on the matter if requested.

In the meantime, a significant shipment of medicines, weighing 3,055 kg, was dispatched to Upper Kurram to address the emergency healthcare needs of the area. This action came under the instructions of Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur and the health advisor, with the medicines being delivered via government helicopter.

To prepare for a potential operation against militants, the district administration has set up temporary camps for displaced persons (TDPs) in anticipation of further violence in four village councils in lower Kurram. These councils include Bagan, Mandori, Charkhel, Ochat, Chapri, and Chapripao. Camps have been established at the Degree College in Tal, Technical College, Rescue 1122, and a designated block at the district court to accommodate the displaced families.

As tensions continue to rise in Kurram, the KP government’s plans to restore peace will be tested in the coming days, with both military action and diplomatic efforts needed to address the complex situation.
