Kurram Deputy Commissioner Injured in Attack as Peace Agreement Reached in the Region

Kurram Deputy Commissioner (DC) Javedullah Mehsud was injured on Saturday when unknown assailants opened fire on his convoy near Bagan, as reported by local media News. The DC was immediately transferred to Lower Alizai Hospital for medical treatment. Plans are underway to airlift him to Peshawar via helicopter, according to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government spokesperson Barrister Muhammad Ali Saif.

The attack comes just as an aid convoy, intended to deliver food and essential supplies to Kurram, was preparing to depart. President Asif Ali Zardari strongly condemned the incident, calling for swift action against those attempting to disrupt peace efforts in the region. He urged the public not to allow these elements to succeed in their attempts to create chaos.

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi also condemned the attack, calling it a “conspiracy to sabotage the peace agreement” between warring factions in Kurram. He expressed his hope for Mehsud’s full and quick recovery. KP Governor Faisal Karim Kundi described the attack as a clear indication of the provincial government’s failure to maintain order, especially as it targeted an aid convoy meant to bring relief to the area.

The attack follows a recent peace agreement reached between Sunni and Shia communities in Kurram District, aimed at ending deadly sectarian violence that has claimed over 130 lives since November. The violence had severely disrupted food and medicine supplies to Upper Kurram, with key routes remaining closed for more than two months.
