North Korea showcases nuclear reprisal capability with strategic cruise missile test-fire

North Korea conducted a military exercise on Thursday to showcase its ability to launch a nuclear retaliation against enemy troops, test-firing four strategic cruise missiles. The missile unit of the Korean People’s Army fired four Hwasal-2 missiles into the sea near Kim Chaek city, North Hamgyong province. Some units conducted firepower training without using live ammunition to strengthen North Korea’s lethal nuclear counterattack capacity.

Despite UN Security Council resolutions prohibiting North Korea from engaging in missile programs, the country has made steady progress in developing and mass-producing new missiles.

South Korea and Japan did not report any announcement regarding the missile launches. US and South Korean officials conducted a tabletop exercise to assess the potential of North Korea deploying a nuclear bomb.
