Pakistan has reported another new polio case on Saturday, bringing the total number of cases for 2025 to six. According to a statement from the National Emergency Operations Centre, the Regional Reference Laboratory for Polio Eradication at the National Institute of Health confirmed the case, which was found in Thatta, Sindh.
So far, Sindh has accounted for four of the six polio cases reported in the country this year. In 2024, Pakistan saw a total of 74 cases, with 27 in Balochistan, 23 in Sindh, 22 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and one each in Punjab and Islamabad.
In an effort to combat the disease, the Pakistan Polio Program carries out multiple mass vaccination campaigns each year. The first of 2025 was held from February 3 to 9, following the launch of the drive by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who administered polio drops to children under five years old.
Additionally, a targeted vaccination activity was conducted this week in 104 union councils located along the Afghanistan border or home to Afghan refugee populations. This initiative aimed to reduce the risk of polio transmission across borders and within the country, successfully vaccinating over 600,000 children.
