Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif was actively engaged in a series of crucial meetings with global leaders on the sidelines of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. Among the leaders he met were Bangladesh Chief Executive Dr. Muhammad Yunus, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the Emir of Kuwait, and UN Secretary-General António Guterres. The discussions were of paramount importance, primarily revolving around enhancing bilateral cooperation, addressing regional conflicts, and reaffirming Pakistan’s role in global peace and security.
During his meeting with Bangladesh Chief Executive Dr. Muhammad Yunus, PM Shehbaz participated in a ceremony commemorating Bangladesh’s 50th year as a member of the United Nations. Both leaders had positive discussions about expanding bilateral cooperation across various fields, aiming to strengthen relations between the two nations. The meeting, attended by key Pakistani officials, underscored the mutual commitment to fostering friendly ties between Pakistan and Bangladesh, providing reassurance and confidence to the audience.
In a meeting with UN Secretary-General António Guterres, PM Shehbaz emphasized the need for the UN to play a more active role in implementing its Security Council resolutions on Jammu and Kashmir. He urged the UN to ensure Kashmiris’ right to self-determination and expressed Pakistan’s concerns over India’s ongoing actions in the occupied valley, stressing the need for a resolution to secure lasting peace in South Asia. Additionally, he condemned Israel’s actions against Palestinians and reiterated Pakistan’s support for the establishment of a sovereign Palestinian state.

PM Shehbaz also welcomed the UN’s ‘Summit of the Future’ initiative and expressed hope that it would assist developing nations in achieving their Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and climate targets. Secretary-General Guterres thanked Pakistan for its active role at the UN and commended its contributions to international peace, particularly through its peacekeeping forces. These forces, deployed in various conflict zones, have played a significant role in maintaining peace and stability, thereby enhancing Pakistan’s reputation as a responsible and peace-loving nation.
During a bilateral meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, PM Shehbaz discussed the strengthening of ties between Pakistan and Turkey. The two leaders agreed to expand cooperation in trade, investment, defence, and security and reviewed preparations for the upcoming 7th session of the Pakistan-Turkey High-Level Strategic Cooperation Council, to be held in Islamabad soon. They also addressed regional and global issues, particularly the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, with a shared optimism for potential solutions.
In a separate meeting with Kuwait’s Crown Prince, Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Mubarak Al-Sabah, PM Shehbaz reaffirmed the deep-rooted ties between Pakistan and Kuwait. Both leaders expressed their desire to strengthen political, economic, and defence cooperation, alongside enhancing people-to-people exchanges. Shehbaz also proposed engaging with Kuwait through mutually beneficial economic investments, particularly under the framework of Pakistan’s Special Investment Facilitation Council.
