Today, Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif launched the Faceless Customs Assessment System at the Karachi Port, marking a significant step in modernizing Pakistan’s customs operations. The new system drastically reduces clearance time, with the process now taking as little as 15 to 20 minutes, and a maximum of 19 hours. One of the main features of the Faceless Customs Assessment is that it removes direct contact between importers and customs officers, preventing any potential bias or malpractice. Officers will no longer be aware of the specific goods they are processing, and importers won’t know which official is handling their cargo, ensuring integrity in the system.
This reform is a crucial part of the Federal Board of Revenue’s (FBR) broader modernization program. The system has also been designed to prevent the use of social media apps on the devices involved in processing, ensuring a faster and more secure workflow. Importers will now experience smoother, faster clearance, contributing to a more business-friendly environment.
In line with the Prime Minister’s vision, only committed and honest officers are assigned to operate this digital system. The work environment has also been optimized, with staff provided access to essential amenities such as food, prayer facilities, and washrooms, while mobile phone usage is strictly prohibited.
The implementation of the Faceless Assessment System has already led to an 80% reduction in complaints and significantly shortened the clearance time, representing a major breakthrough in the fight against corruption within Pakistan’s customs operations.
