Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif Takes Steps to Boost Foreign Direct Investment in Information Technology

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has outlined a plan to attract Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) aimed at developing Pakistan’s Information Technology (IT) infrastructure. During a meeting with a three-member delegation of the Asia Internet Coalition led by Managing Director Jeff Paine in Islamabad, the Prime Minister emphasized the government’s efforts to promote fundamental infrastructure based on Artificial Intelligence. He expressed his unwavering determination to position Pakistan as a leading country in the artificial intelligence domain within the region, showcasing his vision and ambition for the country’s IT sector.

Additionally, PM Shehbaz has set a clear direction for the future by directing the preparation of a comprehensive roadmap. This roadmap is designed to significantly increase Pakistan’s IT exports and ensure the provision of fast and uninterrupted internet services throughout the country. The government is actively digitizing the entire governmental system under the Digital Pakistan Initiatives, a key part of this roadmap.

Furthermore, Prime Minister Shehbaz highlighted the digitization of the Federal Board of Revenue as a significant milestone in steering the economy towards a digital framework and an automated system. The meeting also addressed matters related to data safety, emphasizing the government’s unwavering commitment to protecting personal data, the code of conduct pertaining to internet content, and strategies for dealing with electronic crimes.

The delegation was briefed on the ongoing consultations with stakeholders on the draft of the Personal Data Protection Bill, underscoring the government’s commitment to transparency and inclusivity. The meeting was attended by Minister of State for Information Technology and Telecommunications Shaza Fatima Khawaja, IT expert Tania Aidrus, and relevant senior officers.
