Saqlain Mushtaq Set to Become Pakistan’s New Head Coach Ahead of New Zealand Tour

Former Pakistan off-spinner Saqlain Mushtaq is set to take over as the head coach of the national cricket team, sources confirmed on Saturday. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is looking to stabilize the team following a disappointing performance in the ICC Champions Trophy.

According to insiders, Saqlain has agreed to the position after a meeting with PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi. He is expected to assume his role before Pakistan’s upcoming tour of New Zealand, where the team will play five T20Is and three ODIs from March 16 to April 5.

Saqlain, who has previously coached Pakistan’s national team, was approached for the role before the Champions Trophy but declined due to concerns over team selection, particularly regarding the role of all-rounder Shadab Khan.

Pakistan’s lackluster performance in the Champions Trophy 2025, where they failed to secure a single win, led to scrutiny of senior players’ form. As a result, the PCB is considering introducing new talent for the upcoming New Zealand series.

With Saqlain’s expertise in spin bowling and his previous coaching experience, he is expected to play a crucial role in rebuilding the team and preparing for future international competitions, including the 2026 T20 World Cup.

An official announcement about Saqlain’s appointment is expected soon, with the PCB aiming to finalize the coaching staff before Pakistan departs for New Zealand on March 12.
