The General Assembly adopted a resolution (A/RES/60/252) in March 2006, officially establishing World Information Society Day to be celebrated every year on 17 May. In November 2006, during the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference held in Antalya, Turkey, a significant decision was made to consolidate the observance of World Telecommunication Day and World Information Society Day into a combined event to be celebrated annually on 17 May as World Telecommunication and Information Society Day. This decision was formalized through the adoption of Resolution 68. As part of this resolution, Member States and Sector Members were urged to mark the occasion by organizing national programs designed to encourage introspection and the exchange of ideas on the theme endorsed by the Council. Furthermore, the resolution called for active engagement in discussions on various aspects of the theme with all societal partners. Additionally, it emphasized the importance of formulating a comprehensive report that captures the outcomes of national deliberations on the theme, with the intention of sharing this information with the ITU and its wider membership.
