WASHINGTON: President Donald Trump has turned down Iran’s proposal for a weeklong ceasefire and told his advisers that he expects US military strikes against Tehran to resume following November’s midterm elections, according to American officials.
Under the proposed arrangement, Iran would reopen the Strait of Hormuz and restart negotiations over its nuclear programme in exchange for Washington ending its blockade of Iranian ports. The blockade has inflicted significant damage on Iran’s economy.
Trump remains doubtful that Tehran will accept his conditions for an agreement. He has publicly claimed that Iran is seeking a deal after the midterm elections that would require it to dismantle its nuclear programme.
