Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy recently visited Qatar and met with Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani to express appreciation for Qatar’s support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity amidst the ongoing Russian invasion. The meeting comes as Ukraine endeavours to garner global solidarity in its efforts to repel Russian aggression.
During the visit, Zelenskyy commended Qatar’s role in facilitating the return of children forcibly deported by Russia, highlighting the continued cooperation between the two nations in this regard. This is particularly significant as Kyiv has accused Moscow of seizing and relocating thousands of Ukrainian children and teenagers to Russia since the onset of the war in February 2022. However, Russia refutes these allegations, stating that the children were moved from conflict zones out of concern for their safety.
Furthermore, Qatar’s assistance in brokering deals to reunite Ukrainian children with their families has been instrumental, with several reunifications facilitated through the country’s efforts. Additionally, discussions between Zelenskyy and the Qatari Emir encompassed the latest developments in the international community’s efforts to end the fighting, protect civilians, and maintain open communication channels to resolve the crisis through dialogue.
The meeting also delved into issues of mutual importance for both countries. Zelenskyy is scheduled to meet with US President Joe Biden in France and attend an international summit on resolving the war in Ukraine that will take place in Switzerland later this month. The United States has affirmed its commitment to deepen its support for Ukraine, with National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan outlining plans for President Biden to engage with President Zelenskyy to discuss the current situation in Ukraine.
The conflict between Ukraine and Russia, which escalated following Russia’s invasion in February 2022, has evolved into a protracted war primarily concentrated in eastern Ukraine. Despite initial setbacks, Ukrainian forces were able to halt Russia’s advance on Kyiv early in the war and push back the Kremlin’s troops in certain areas. However, Russia’s renewed attacks on the city of Kharkiv in northeastern Ukraine have prompted several Western countries, including the United States, to authorize Kyiv to utilize Western-donated weapons to defend against Russian aggression.
