The US Department of State Spokesperson Matthew Miller remained steadfast in the country’s position regarding Imran Khan’s legal situation in Pakistan. In response to a journalist’s question about Imran Khan’s incarceration, Miller reiterated that the matter falls squarely within the jurisdiction of the Pakistani courts and is not for the United States to intervene in.
Reiterating the US stance on this delicate issue, Miller underscored, “It is our firm belief that when it comes to these laws in Pakistan and this court case, it is a matter solely for the Pakistani courts to decide.” He further emphasized that the US government holds the utmost respect for the sovereignty of Pakistan’s legal processes and refrains from any form of interference in such matters.
Miller’s comments came in response to a specific query regarding Imran Khan’s legal troubles, including his acquittal in a cypher case and his continued imprisonment in the “un-Islamic marriage” case. The Islamabad High Court recently overturned Khan and PTI Vice-Chairman Shah Mahmood Qureshi’s conviction in the cypher case, but Khan remains incarcerated under the seven-year sentence handed to him and his wife Bushra Bibi in the “un-Islamic nikah” case.
Moreover, Miller shed light on the State Department’s approach, making it clear that the US takes a comprehensive view of the appropriate context and circumstances of different countries when forming its judgments. He emphasized, “When we assess different countries, we meticulously consider the appropriate context and circumstances before making our judgments.”
Regarding the repeated questioning about Imran Khan, Miller reiterated that the US government has addressed the issue on numerous occasions. He underlined, “The legal proceedings against him are something for the Pakistani courts to decide (and) I’d say in accordance with their laws and constitution,”.
