White House Confirms Credibility of Iran’s Threat to Retaliate Against Israel

[post-views]

The White House has confirmed the credibility of Iran’s threat to carry out a retaliatory attack on Israel after its consulate in Damascus, Syria, was bombed on April 1. National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby said that they deemed the potential threat by Iran to be honest, viable, and credible. The US is currently focused on having conversations with their Israeli counterparts to make sure that they have what they need to defend themselves against the expected Iranian attack. Israel has been on high alert since Iran vowed to attack Israeli targets in retaliation for the airstrike that killed at least seven members of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps in Syria, including two top generals.

Iran has accused Israel of carrying out the attack and has vowed to respond. Hezbollah, Iran’s main ally in Lebanon, has also said that the attack will not go unpunished. Kirby confirmed that the US has adjusted its force posture in the region ahead of the expected Iranian attack, but he declined to provide specifics.

The escalation comes as Israel continues its military offensive on the Gaza Strip, which has killed more than 33,600 Palestinians and injured over 75,800 amid mass destruction and shortages of necessities. The Biden administration has been urging Israel to ease its restrictions on the distribution of humanitarian assistance in Gaza, where famine is already setting in. Kirby said that the administration has noted a significant increase in trucks entering the besieged coastal enclave. Still, it is more critical for the goods to get into the bellies of the people who desperately need them.
