Just a little over a month since assuming the role of Bangladesh’s army chief, General Waker-Us-Zaman found himself in the spotlight as he announced the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who fled the country on Monday. This drastic development unfolded in the wake of ongoing protests and violence that originated from student groups’ demands to eliminate a controversial quota system in government jobs. The protests, which began peacefully, turned violent as the government responded with force, leading to clashes and casualties. The situation escalated into a movement aiming to remove Hasina, who has held power for 15 years and recently claimed a fourth consecutive term in January. The unrest has resulted in nearly 250 casualties.

General Zaman, aged 58, began his tenure as army chief on June 23 for the standard term of three years. In Bangladesh, the army chief holds a significant role, overseeing the country’s military operations and often influencing political decisions. Born in Dhaka in 1966, he is married to Sarahnaz Kamalika Zaman, the daughter of General Muhammad Mustafizur Rahman, who served as army chief from 1997 to 2000.

Before assuming the role of army chief, Zaman served as the Chief of General Staff for a little over six months. In this role, his responsibilities included overseeing military operations and intelligence, Bangladesh’s involvement in UN peacekeeping operations, and budgeting.

Throughout his 35-year career, Zaman has worked closely with Hasina, serving as the principal staff officer at the Armed Forces Division under the Prime Minister’s Office. The army website also highlights his involvement in modernizing the army.

Amid the renewed protests in the country, Zaman, in a reassuring move, urged army personnel to ensure the security of people’s lives, properties, and vital state installations. However, it will be of more importance whether he responds to the will of the people in the long run. Political representation, liberties and human rights are very important for the people of Bangladesh.
