Pakistani opposition leader, Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), has expressed apprehension over the plan to apprehend Shaukat Tarin, former finance minister and member of the ruling party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), for purportedly obstructing negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

In an interview with a private news network, the seasoned PML-N politician emphasized that Tarin should face a fair trial in court rather than being detained without just cause. Abbasi clarified that he does not support using the legal system as a tool for “political vendetta” against Mr. Tarin.

Abbasi also addressed the internal matters of his party, revealing that he had already communicated to the party that he would not be joining any new leadership under the supervision of Maryam Nawaz, daughter of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif. He emphasized his loyalty to Mr. Sharif and declared that he will remain his supporter.

To sum up, Abbasi’s interview reflects his concern over the legal system being exploited for political purposes and his continued allegiance to Nawaz Sharif.
