An Overview !

Solar energy is a clean, renewable and affordable source of electricity that can provide power to common households in Pakistan. According to the World Bank, Pakistan has tremendous potential to generate solar power, as almost all parts of the country are dry and hot, barring a few areas in the northwest1. However, the country currently only produces a meager 1.16% of its electricity through solar power and 64% with fossil fuels.

A comparative analysis of solar energy and other sources of electricity in Pakistan can be based on the following criteria:

Cost:
Solar energy is cheaper than fossil fuels and coal, as it does not require fuel or water to operate. The World Bank estimates that expanding solar and wind power to at least 30% of Pakistan’s total electricity capacity by 2030 would save Pakistan US$5 billion over the next 20 years, mainly from reduced fuel consumption. Moreover, solar panels have low maintenance costs and long lifespans, making them a cost-effective investment for households.

Energy security:
Solar energy can enhance Pakistan’s energy security by reducing its dependence on imported oil and gas, which are subject to price fluctuations and geopolitical risks. Solar energy can also help address the chronic power shortages and load shedding that affect millions of households in Pakistan, especially in rural areas. Solar energy can be distributed through off-grid or mini-grid systems, which can provide reliable and uninterrupted power to remote communities.

Environmental impact:
Solar energy is a carbon-free and pollution-free source of electricity that can help Pakistan reduce its greenhouse gas emissions and mitigate climate change. Pakistan is one of the most vulnerable countries to the impacts of global warming, such as floods, droughts, heat waves and glacial melting. Solar energy can also help conserve water resources, which are scarce and stressed in Pakistan due to population growth, urbanization and agriculture.

To tap into its solar power potential, Pakistan needs to urgently implement a major scale-up of solar and wind generation through competitive bidding, which would decrease prices and attract private investment. It also needs to invest in upgrading its transmission and distribution network, including modern automation and control systems, to integrate variable renewable energy into the grid. Furthermore, it needs to adopt supportive policies and regulations that create a conducive environment for renewable energy development and deployment.
