Deadly 7.1 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Tibet and Nepal, Leaving Over 120 Dead and Hundreds Injured

A powerful earthquake rocked Tibet on Tuesday, killing at least 126 people and injuring 188 others, with many still trapped in the rubble. The tremor, which also affected neighboring Nepal, triggered numerous aftershocks across western China. The epicenter, located near Mount Everest, was recorded at a magnitude of 7.1 by the U.S. Geological Survey and was relatively shallow at six miles deep. Chinese authorities reported a slightly lower magnitude of 6.8.

Over 1,500 rescue workers were deployed to help search for survivors and clear debris in the sparsely populated region. More than 1,000 homes were severely damaged, and videos from the state broadcaster CCTV showed destroyed buildings and crushed cars. Rescue teams are working under challenging conditions, as the area is known for its seismic activity and high altitude, averaging 13,800 feet.

In Nepal, the earthquake also caused panic in Kathmandu, with residents rushing into the streets. However, there is limited information from the remote areas closer to the epicenter. The region, known for its earthquake-prone nature due to the collision of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates, has experienced similar powerful quakes in the past.

Tibet, an autonomous region in China, has a long history of political tensions with Beijing. The Dalai Lama, Tibet’s spiritual leader who has been exiled in India since 1959, expressed his condolences, praying for those affected by the devastating quake.
